The Starless Sea Quote 1

Thoughts

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern has been one of the coziest books I have read since Tress of the Emerald Sea. The story unfolds in a rollercoaster ride of emotions with themes of loss, love, and hope recurring throughout the novel. It is a beautiful and whimsical tale where no string is left untied.

What I liked:

  • The mysterious “kitchen” was a fun concept and I really enjoyed all the interactions with “them”.
  • All the smells and flavors described. Scratch & sniff stickers for each aromatic desciption would elevate the reading experience of The Starless Sea. Perhaps Morgenstern will come out with scented candles in the near future. *fingers crossed*
  • Vivid and surreal imagery that delight the senses. This may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but as an artist and creative, I bask in Morgensten’s lyrical writing style.

What I didn’t like:

  • The author leaves you hanging at the end of each chapter and jumps into one of the side stories. If you are anything like me and need to know what happens next, then it is impossible to put this book down. Hold off on reading this book if you have more pressing tasks that require your attention.
  • I am not a huge fan of the “insta-love” between Ezra and Dorian, but the other love stories told within the book will take your breath away.

Rating Breakdown

  • Entertainment (5 of 5) - This was a fun read, and I loved all the smaller stories interspersed between the chapters.
  • Plot (4 of 5) - One can easily lose sight of the plot - as easily as getting lost in the maze-like underworld that the book is mostly set in. However, I think that is the point and part of the beauty of this book. The plot unfolds in a way that feels as if it is not already written in stone, and it adds to the surreal and dream-like quality of the book.

  • Setting/Atmosphere (5 of 5) - Most of the novel takes place within a labyrinth made of books, mysterious doors, and hidden curiosities, so I was completely enamored.
  • Execution (5 of 5) - The way the author weaves the story in and out was really well done.

  • Characters (4 of 5) - The side characters and “villain” were so much more interesting than the protagonist. I especially love stories with a complex and relatable antagonist, such as the one in The Starless Sea.
  • Writing (5 of 5) - If you like the writing style of Neil Gaiman’s books, such as that in Stardust and Ocean at the End of the Lane, then you will enjoy this book.

Who Would Like The Starless Sea

This book is for you if any or all of the following points ring true:

  • You are the type to “stop and smell the flowers”
  • You enjoy getting lost along winding paths, secret gardens, and hidden tunnels
  • You practice or admire the art of Tsundoku (the Japanese term defined as collecting piles of books without reading them)

Who Would Not Like The Starless Sea

You may consider passing on The Starless Sea if you agree with any of these points:

  • You prefer a less “descriptive” writing style
  • You prefer linear storylines that move at a more rapid pace
  • You do not enjoy magical realism or fantasy novels
  • Portrayals of LGBT relationships make you uncomfortable
  • You have issues with things being “out of place” and feel the need to have everything in an orderly fashion. You believe organized chaos is not and should not be a thing.
